Students

Is this a military style camp?
No, Boys State is an educational camp that gives young Arkansans a better understanding of how elections and state government work in their state.  You learn by doing in a mock state.  From actually campaigning in a party primary to making sure that you get legislation passed that benefits your cities. By the end of Boys State you will have a better idea of how democracy works in a state and local government.
I’ve heard we can’t walk on the grass. Why?
There are over 700 students attending Boys Sate each year. Many of the paths we walk on are repetitive. We stick to the sidewalks so we don’t wear tracks into the grass at U.C.A.
Is this a Conservative or Christian camp?
No, Boys State does not advocate for any one political or religious ideology.
Is Boys State good for my College resume?
Yes, many universities and colleges revere American Legion Boys State as the premier leadership camp in the country today.
What should I bring to Boys State?

One fitted twin bed sheet and one other sheet, blanket, pillow, toilet articles, towels, wash clothes, & coat hangers. You will be furnished with TWO t-shirts to wear during the day. We will have more county t-shirts available for purchase at the canteen.  Athletic shorts, cut-offs, or non-Boy’s State shirts are not permitted except during recreation and bedtime. Overalls, caps, and hats are not permitted. One pair of pants (jeans are okay)  will be needed to wear to the State Capital on Friday, but its not required. Casual shorts or pants will be needed for the rest of the week. You may need a raincoat or sweater. It is strongly encouraged that you pack writing utensils (like pens, paper, even poster board & markers) as well as three dollars in quarters. Almost every office you run for requires a 25-cent filling fee. The dorms at U.C.A. have very effective air conditioning units. Bringing an extra blanket for your bed is recommended. During Recreation time a pool is available so bring a pair of trunks if you want to swim. A deposit of $20.00 will be charged for the key to you room. You will pay this when you check into your dormitory. The deposit will be refunded when the key is returned.

What can I not bring to Boys State?

No television sets, refrigerators, computers, video games, or video cameras. Cell phones are allowed but only during designated times. Our policy for this is similar to most schools. The phone will be taken up and the delegate may get it back from the Coordinator. If parents have an emergency they can contact camp headquarters at 479-283-1609. That phone number will be available at registration.

What forms do I need at registration?

If you didn’t upload these prior to attending, you will need to have 3 things turned in at Registration.

1) A health certificate signed by a physician (or proof of physical)

2) Emergency medical treatment permission form

3)The 2 page Universal Release Form.

If you have successfully uploaded all 3 online, then we don’t need these turned in upon arrival. If any one of these were not uploaded then we expect you to turn this in.

Will I have an opportunity to buy extra supplies during camp?
Yes, extra t-shirts, toilet articles, pens, stationary, campaign material, and snacks can be purchased during canteen breaks. Regular meals will be furnished three times daily at the cafeteria.
If I want to be part of the Boys State band or choir what should I bring?
Boys State Band will be a part of the activities for those who play an instrument if you play a flute, clarinet, alto or tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or mellophone, you will need to bring it with you to Boys State. Percussion instruments will be provided for the week but you must bring your own sticks/mallets. Tubas, baritone saxophones and baritones are usually available. Call 870-9184211 for information concerning the availability of any instrument. Boys State Choir will be a part of the activities during the week for those who would like to sing. Delegates can be a member of both the Band and Choir. Please report to Old Main Auditorium on Sunday at 4:45 p.m. for the organization meeting for Band and Choir.
Can I drive myself to Boys State?
Yes, if you drive your own vehicle, you must park in a designated area and give the keys to your Senior Counselor until time of departure. You will not be allowed to leave the premises at any time without proper approval and chaperoning. It’s important to park your car in the designated areas. Ask your Senior Counselor where to park upon arrival so as to avoid being towed.

Here’s how the new Online Registration Process Works:

  1. Every high school across the state of Arkansas is signing up as a participating school online by accessing https://registerstate.com/ar/boys. We’ve asked them to sign-up on or before February 28th as a School Counselor. You do not have to login and register as a participating post. Our assumption is that all posts will participate at the same level as in previous years.
  2. The schools will begin their selection process for students to attend Arkansas Boys State. This is a great time for you as a participating post to reconnect (via email or phone) with the schools you have traditionally worked with.
    • If you are interested in supporting additional students or schools not previously supported please contact Lloyd Jackson at Lloyd@Arkansasboysstate.com or by phone at 870-403-2661.
  3. If you are a participating post that wants to retain application forms to stay in touch with the selected delegates and/or his parents, he will have the opportunity to print off his Registration Receipt. A Registration Receipt looks like the image to the right.
  4. Once the schools have selected their delegates they will be sharing their participation lists with you. This can be via email, handoff, or via US mail. (Whatever is most convenient)

It will also include Alternate Delegates chosen. Schools are to provide this to you no later than March 31st. Some schools might give you this along with the delegates Order Confirmation. Only the participation lists need to be mailed to the department Headquarters. The Order confirmation is only for the posts to keep if you choose.

Upon receiving this list, you will be able to see how many student have been selected from the school(s) partnering with your post. We also want all alternates provided on these lists. It will allow us to gather a full list of alternates at the headquarters leading up to Arkansas Boys State. Make sure you can see the difference between those selected to attend and the

What if I don’t have 100% of the funds to send all selected delegates on the school list?
First, we would like for you to contact the school(s). There are many cases where the schools can support at least a portion of the delegates. Even if they cannot, they might be able to help you find another sponsor or local business. Individual donors can sponsor delegates to Boys State too. If you still cannot find any other supporting funds, we encourage you to call our American Legion Headquarters at 501-375-1104. Only after all local efforts have been made, we will look to seek out financial support. Ultimately we don’t want a selected delegate to not attend Arkansas Boys State because of the registration fee.

Our office staff will verify all applications and required documentation online. Payment confirmations and registration confirmations will be sent electronically to the schools and individual delegates selected. If you have any questions about the delegates you’ve endorsed following your list submission, we encourage you to call our American Legion Headquarters at 501-375-1104.

Here’s how the new Online Registration Process Works:

  1. Every high school across the state of Arkansas is signing up as a participating school online by accessing https://registerstate.com/ar/boys/. We’ve asked all schools to sign-up on or before February 28th as a School Counselor.
  2. The schools will begin their selection process for students to attend Arkansas Boys State. This is a great time for you as a participating school to reconnect (via email or phone) with the American Legion post that’s partnered with you in the past
    • If you are unsure of the local American Legion post in your community we urge you to call our Department Headquarters in Little Rock at 501-375-1104. We have a complete list of active posts and would be happy to re-connect. Even if the post hasn’t been active in supporting Arkansas Boys State, we would love to restart the partnership.
  3. As a participating school, if you want to retain application forms to stay in touch with the selected delegates and/or his parents, he will have the opportunity to print off his Registration Receipt. A Registration Receipt looks like this:
  4. As you select your students to attend, we ask that you organize all names on a singular participation list. This will be submitted to our department headquarters in Little Rock with the registration fees. If you are partnering with an American Legion post, we want you to give this completed form to them. If the post is providing funds for the delegates, leave the last 2 columns blank. At the bottom, please be sure to mark or notate your alternates. We want to be able to contact alternates if you have a paid student decide he cannot attend up until Boys State begins. Please Note: Alternates will NOT register online. We only need their name and contact information prior to submitting the participation list.
What does a Participation List look like?

Here is an example

This will be what you give to the American Legion post or mail directly to our headquarters in Little Rock. Our office will be looking for these from every single school. It will also include Alternate Delegates chosen. Schools are to provide this to either the post or headquarters via US Mail no later than March 31st . Some posts might ask you to provide order confirmation receipts with this list. That is perfectly acceptable so the posts can keep in close communication with the selected students. Only the participation lists need to be mailed to the department Headquarters. The Order confirmation receipts are only for the posts to keep if they choose. If you are sending more students than fit on a participation list, simply print another copy and staple together.

As a partnering American Legion post receives this list, they will be able to see how many student have been selected from the school(s) partnering with your school. We want all alternates provided on these lists, but they must be marked or else posts could be confused with how much funds to secure. It also allows us to gather a full list of alternates at the headquarters leading up to Arkansas Boys State. Make sure you mark the difference between those selected to attend and the alternates.

If not partnering with an American Legion post, you and your team gather the necessary funds, complete the information on the participation list and submit this along with the total payment to American Legion Department Headquarters at P.O. Box 3280, Little Rock, AR 72203. Please do this no LATER than May 1st .

  • Please be sure that all Alternates are listed and marked as “Alternates”.
  • Please mark those who you are providing funds for. The fee is $175.00 per delegate.
  • You do not need to provide funds for Alternate Delegates. Please mark who is paying for each of the delegates. If separate businesses or local nonprofits are supporting, we want you to list each individually.
  • Be sure to sign the bottom statement that reads, “As an authorized high school official, I have examined the above named delegate or alternate and found that he measures up to the ideals of The American Legion and the Arkansas Boys State Program.”
  • Please do NOT send order confirmation receipts with the participation list. We simply only need all names on the participation list.
  • If not partnering with a local post, you can submit the list without a bottom signature. We will make note of this in the headquarters office and complete the registration process for your students.
What if I don’t have 100% of the funds to send all selected delegates on the school list?

First, we would like for you to contact your local businesses. In most cases, the community will support their delegates. Even if they cannot, they might be able to help you find another local sponsor or business. Individual donors can sponsor delegates to Boys State too. If you still cannot find any other supporting funds, we encourage you to call our American Legion Headquarters at 501-375-1104. Only after all local efforts have been made, we will look to seek out financial support. Ultimately we don’t want a selected delegate to not attend Arkansas Boys State because of the registration fee alone.

Our office staff will verify all applications and required documentation online. Payment confirmations and registration confirmations will be sent electronically to the individual delegates selected. If you have any questions about the delegates you’ve endorsed following your list submission, we encourage you to call our American Legion Headquarters at 501-375-1104.

So how can I track the progress of all selected students throughout the spring until all are registered?
By logging into your account online, you will be able to view the delegates as they register. We have it setup so that you can see all this information without retaining a paper trail. Once logged into your Register State account, look for the My Assignments tab. You should be able to see all of your students selected in a list format. As their registration is processed, you’ll see confirmations listed.
So what are the 3 primary milestones that I need to be aware of for Arkansas Boys State Registration?

We see 3 major milestones in this process:

  1. Feb 28th : Deadline for Schools to register as a School Counselor. This allows us to know which Schools are participating
  2. March 31st: Deadline for Schools to select their delegates & initially register online.
  3. May 1st: Deadline to be registered as a delegate and paid by their sponsor.
